Birds of a Feather - A Premium eCommerce Migration That Preserved the Brand and Improved the Experience

Birds of a Feather is a premium South African home decor retailer known for products you won't find anywhere else. Their Shopify store worked - but it was limiting them. We migrated everything to WordPress, improved the shopping experience, and made sure not a single customer noticed the switch.

The Brief

Birds of a Feather is a South African home decor destination offering a carefully curated selection of distinctive products – hand-selected and not found anywhere else. Their brand is defined by refinement, and their customer base expects an online experience that reflects it.

Birds of a Feather came to RubyWeb via Ruby Digital with a brief to migrate from Shopify to WordPress and WooCommerce. The goal was a more flexible, future-proof platform that preserved the brand’s visual identity, matched or improved the existing eCommerce functionality, and gave the team more control over how the store evolved.

The Challenge

Platform migrations carry risk at every level. Customer data, order history, product catalogues, and SEO rankings all need to transfer intact. Any disruption to the shopping experience risks customer trust and sales. And for a brand built on aesthetic precision, design consistency is non-negotiable.

Beyond the migration itself, the new platform needed to replicate specific eCommerce functionality – wholesale registration, cross-sell capabilities, inventory management – that had been configured into Shopify over time.

  • Full Shopify to WordPress migration required - products, customer accounts, and order history all needing secure transfer
  • SEO risk during migration - existing organic rankings needed to be protected through careful redirect and URL management
  • Design consistency - the visual identity and brand aesthetic of the Shopify store needed to be fully replicated on WordPress
  • Feature parity required - wholesale registration, cross-sell functionality, and inventory management all needed equivalent implementation
  • Minimal downtime needed - no disruption to sales or customer experience during transition
  • Multi-device experience - the new store needed to perform as well on mobile as on desktop

Our Approach

We built the migration strategy around two non-negotiables: data integrity and design fidelity. All product data, customer records, and order history were mapped and validated before any transfer began. The new WordPress design was signed off against brand standards before the migration was executed.

The transition was scheduled during low-traffic periods, with rigorous staging environment testing before go-live.

Architecture & UX Decisions

The new site was built on WordPress with WooCommerce as the commerce layer, designed to replicate the Shopify brand aesthetic while improving the underlying structure. Navigation was restructured and simplified – product filtering was introduced to help customers explore the range more intuitively.

Wholesale registration and cross-sell functionality were built as custom WooCommerce features. User testing was conducted before launch to validate the browsing and purchase experience.

The Build

The core deliverable was a fully custom WordPress and WooCommerce store – migrated from Shopify, with all eCommerce functionality replicated or improved, and the brand aesthetic preserved throughout. Key deliverables included:

  • Comprehensive Shopify to WordPress migration strategy covering products, customer accounts, and order history
  • Full data transfer with integrity validation before and after migration
  • 301 redirect implementation and SEO continuity management across all migrated URLs
  • Custom WordPress and WooCommerce design aligned to brand aesthetic
  • Wholesale Registration section for B2B customers
  • Cross-sell functionality integrated into product and cart pages
  • Simplified navigation with product filtering for intuitive range exploration
  • Adaptive responsive design across desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • User testing conducted and design adjustments made prior to launch
  • Migration executed during low-traffic period to minimise disruption

The Outcome

All data transferred securely. eCommerce features were replicated and in several cases improved. The brand aesthetic was preserved with a visual upgrade the team described as consistent with the Birds of a Feather identity. Customers experienced a cleaner, more intuitive shopping journey.

The new platform gives the business a scalable infrastructure for future campaigns, seasonal collections, and product range expansion – on a platform they own and control, without Shopify’s per-transaction constraints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes - with a structured migration strategy. We map all data before the transfer begins, validate integrity at each stage, and run full verification after migration.
Through redirect mapping - every existing Shopify URL gets a 301 redirect to the corresponding WordPress URL. We implement and verify all redirects before the old store is taken down.
For brands that need custom functionality, greater design control, or a multi-channel strategy, WordPress and WooCommerce typically offer more flexibility - no per-transaction fees and a more extensible platform.
Through custom WooCommerce development. WordPress matches the features you need through custom builds or WooCommerce extensions, configured specifically for your business logic.
By running the migration in a staging environment and only switching over after full testing is complete. We schedule the cutover during low-traffic periods with rollback plans in place.
Cross-sell prompts show customers products related to what they are viewing or have in their cart. For a home decor brand, this increases average order value and helps customers discover more of the range.
